Recess time!

The headline says it all. White House May Recess Appoint Bolton.

A recess appointment means that John Bolton gets the job until either this Congress gives him an up-or-down vote (filibustering is useless), or the next Congress comes into Session, which will be January 2007. Hopefully the next Congress with be filibuster proof.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Get a gun, Git-R-Done

I have already commented upon Castle Rock v. Gonzales, a SCOTUS case where it was found that a woman had no Constitutional right to protection because she had a court order. Her three daughters were abducted by her ex-husband, and their bodies were found in his trunk after he committed "suicide by cop."

This article, The Right to Self-Defense, shows that women need to be armed to protect themselves from abusive husbands, but the radical Left, champions of feminism, refuse to let anyone have that kind of power.

Responsible adults — both male and female — have both a right and a need to defend themselves and their families, with lethal force if necessary. If domestic violence advocates had focused on putting a gun in Jessica's hand and training her to use it, then the three Gonzales children might still be alive. After all, Jessica knew where her husband was. Indeed, she informed the police repeatedly of his location.

Of course, the Gonzales case — in and of itself — presents difficulties for the use of armed force by private citizens. Would the same police who believed Simon Gonzales was not dangerous have believed Jessica to be justified in picking up a gun to protect her children from him? Would the police have charged her for use of a weapon? Regardless, these sticky debates would probably be taking place in the presence of three living children and not three dead ones.

Nevertheless, most anti-domestic violence advocates strenuously avoid gun ownership as a possible solution to domestic violence. Instead, they appeal for more police intervention even though the police have no obligation to provide protection.

It is your obligation to be armed and able to protect yourself. Face facts, 911 is state sponsored Dial-A-Prayer. Chances are, the police won't get there in time to save you. It will all be over by the time they arrive. For you at least.

Universal Health care

It seems that the United States is trying to move toward a single-payer health system like the disaster that is Canada. Universal Health Care Push Being Revived.

Advocates of a single-payer system - where the government would collect taxes and cover everyone, similar to programs in Canada and across Europe - have introduced bills in at least 18 state legislatures. Some are symbolic gestures, but heated debate is taking place in California and Vermont.

In Ohio, doctors, union officials and religious leaders are gathering signatures to get a single-payer health system placed on a ballot next year.

This will be a disaster if it passes anywhere. Already Tennessee is buckling under TennCare and massive cuts are underway. While I am still on TennCare (somewhat), my family has been dropped, and both of them have chronic problems that require care that we cannot afford.

I am in a real quandary on this subject. My family and I desperately need health care, but are unable to afford it. We turn to the state and they refuse my family. I am leery about state run health care, but yet my life depends upon it. I guess it boils down to if you can afford health care, you should get it. If you can't afford it due to disability, then the state should step in and help out. Which is our case. My wife is totally disabled, and I work a part time job to keep myself afloat.

There are no easy answers, and many people are hurt by this.

But my bottom line is still, despite my condition and my needs, that the government single-payer system would be a disaster.

'06 Gubernatorial Straw Poll

While the '06 U.S. Senate race in Tennessee is already in full swing, we still don't have a Republican candidate to face Governor Bredesen. It's time for Republicans to get a horse in the '06 gubernatorial race!

Several conservative Tennessee bloggers are hosting the first ever multi-blog straw poll of potential candidates to take on Governor Bredesen. Voting will remain open throughout the Fourth of July weekend and you'll be able to get the final results on Tuesday afternoon 7/5.

UPDATE: For results, click here.
